The modern sink has come a long way from it's humble beginnings. Gone are the days when it was a massive sink tub fixed to wall, with a wooden drainer beside it. Now, with kitchen design playing a key role in home improvement, it has ceased to be a mere workday item. There are three basic materials to choose from stainless steel, ceramic and granite.

Stainless steel is both practical and hygienic, the ideal unity for a kitchen incorporating stainless steel appliances. It's a very practical material, resisting rust, corrosion and heat, however it does show scratches. It is easy to clean and has supreme toughness and durability.

Ceramic, perhaps one olf the more traditional materials, is still a popular choice for the more traditional kitchen. It has come a long way from the well known Belfast sink and can now be found in more contamporary designs including undermounted. Although the look has changed ceramic sinks are still prone to chip and crack if they are not treated with care.

Granite sinks are composed of quartz and acrylics giving the finished material an astonishing level of durability. It is available in many different colours and designs and look fantastic in any style of kitchen. Available in sit-on and undermounted this versatile material will look as good in ten years time as it does today resisting heat up to around 280 degrees celcius and shrugging off burns, stains and chips.
